Review:
The first annual Cystinuria Symposium was held on July 16, 2005. George Brown, Symposium organizer and ICF Director and Vice President, writes:
"The symposium in New York went off without a hitch. First Dr. David Goldfarb of St. Vincent's Medical Center, NYC spoke broadly about cystinuria. His topic "Cystinuria a Review" led into the other doctor's presentations. Dr. Goldfarb's presentation went from early cystinuria to the present time. Dr. John Asplin, Litholink and University of Chicago spoke next about the "Urine Chemistries in the Treatment of Patients with Cystinuria". Dr. Asplin's presentation dealt mostly with the nature of cystine in urine, is and how it should be tested to ensure accurate values. Dr. Paul Goodyer of McGill University and Montreal Children's Hospital in Montreal, Canada, spoke about the genetics involved in Cystinuria and also about a possible new medication that shows promise in the test tube, although there have been no human clinical trials. Dr. Michael Grasso, Chairman Dept. of Urology, St. Vincent's Medical center, spoke about the surgical approaches to removing cystine stones. His presentation included a PowerPoint trip through the ureter into the bladder and kidney in search of stones and how they were broken into small pieces or pulverized. Emilia Johns, a registered dietician from Bethlehem, PA spoke about the diet and nutrition concerns of cystinurics. Dr. Samuel Appel of Modesto, CA, presented on the depression and mental state that we cystinurics go through.
All the doctors presented PowerPoint slides in their presentations. Everyone that attended, almost 100 people, came away more informed than they were before the Symposium."
