Over the last several months I have taken a lot of tylenol and tylenol 3 for my stone pain. On my ct scan of 12/18/09 it showed cysts on my liver, I have not addressed this with my primary dr. yet, I figured getting the blocking stone out was priority.
Are cysts on the liver caused by tylenol? I have heard that tylenol is not good long term for the liver.
I will be seeing my dr soon and will follow up on this.
Thanks for any input.
Pam

I have read the disclaimer and understand.

PJ - I don't know the answer to your question 'bout the cysts but ...I was advised not to take alot of Acetaminophen ...don't know that I'm necessarily alergic per say....(it was found that my liver started reacting to ingredients in birth control meds.....I turned jaundus & REALLY tender to the touch in the abs.) However, I know that when I stone...many of the pain meds are Acetaminophen base. I tell the care providers...about I figure, the reason they still prescribe & administer them is due to no longer than I'm on the "heavy stuff" it's ok? I don't know....but when the pain is so bad - I wouldn't care what they gave me, just to make it stop. I think the main point is that too much acetaminophen is proven to affect the liver.

Good point to bring up & question when some of the meds that we as cystinurics take (like Thiola) require routine monitoring of the liver....i'll watch this thread to see what/if the medical panel says & how your Dr. responds..you may want to repost asking the medical panel?

I am not aware of cysts in the liver (which are most often benign and if limited in number and size, not important, related to Tylenol. The most important and serious toxicity of Tylenol on the liver is liver failure....requiring liver transplant...that's the big one. Chronic liver toxicity is much less clearly an issue.

Thanks Dr Goldfarb and Donita. I wasn't too worried about the cysts as all I read online said they occur in many people. But I couldn't find anything relating them to tylenol, which I have had to take much of the last several months. Not taking it at all now, only plan on taking the tylelnol 3's if passing a stone is too much for ibuprofen and hot baths, I am blessed with a high pain tolerance. thanks again. Pam
